Balearic Government and Spain Film Commission design a new way to discover Formentera through the film “Lucía y el sexo”

The island hosts an initial meeting with the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports, the Illes Balears Film Commission, the Consell de Formentera, and local industry representatives

Led by the Spain Film Commission, and in collaboration with the Illes Balears Film Commission, Formentera has been selected as one of four territories to shape the pilot programme of the Experiencies Programme. This initiative, promoted within the framework of the Spain Screen Grand Tour, will draw inspiration from the island’s cinematic heritage to showcase its various strengths, guided by the prestigious film "Lucía y el sexo", directed by Julio Medem, considered one of the landmark works featuring Formentera on the big screen.

This Thursday, and with the aim of advancing the design of the experience, an initial meeting took place on the island with various institutional representatives of the project. Attending the meeting were the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports, Jaume Bauzà; the President of the Spain Film Commission, Juan Manuel Guimeráns; the Director of the Illes Balears Film Commission, Diana de la Cuadra; the President of the Consell de Formentera, Óscar Portas; and the Consell de Formentera’s Councillor for Tourism, Commerce, Innovation and Housing, Artal Francesc Mayans. The delegation was also joined by several technical profiles and multiple representatives from the hospitality and restaurant sectors.

In this context, the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports expressed his gratitude to the Spain Film Commission “for their willingness to include Formentera in this pilot programme.” He also highlighted his appreciation that “such an iconic film as "Lucía y el sexo" can be linked to a unique territory like the island of Formentera.”

Additionally, Diana de la Cuadra, Director of the Illes Balears Film Commission, stated that “today we met with public and private entities to jointly build a tourism experience connected to the world of cinema.” According to de la Cuadra, this experience “will allow people to discover the island in a completely new way.”

It is worth noting that the project will be officially presented on 23 September, during a key event in the country’s cinematic calendar: the 73rd San Sebastián International Film Festival. The initiative will also include three additional experiences, located in Burgos, Galicia, and Seville. The Experiencies Programme is financed by the Ministry of Industry and Tourism – State Secretariat for Tourism (SETUR), through Next Generation EU funds.
